I have populated list item with a recordgroup at runtime...
now i want to set one of the values from that group as the default selected value...how to do that plz...help...

For me, the default item is the top item. Use a hidden column, for your 'default item', populate the hidden column with an 'a', for all other items, populate the hidden column with a 'b'. Then sort on that column first.
